As far we consider, most of us know the benefits of herbal plants and very often does not understand the value of them.
Herbal plants are numerous in number. But, it’s sure we can grow some of the most useful plants which are most affordable by nature.
Dhurvaathithailam” is prepared using the root of this plant.
2. Ocimum sanctum
Holy basil- “Thulasi”
It’s wide spread plant. It has specific odour and spice. Different varieties are available. Leaf contains yellowish green essential oil in crystalline state ,it is called “Basil Camphoe”
Methods of using:-
Steam the leaves of Tulsi plant in hot water- Reduces fever, cough and increase sweating.
Soaked tulsi leaves are good remedy for cough and flem.
Grind the seeds of tulsi in cold water to reduce the abdominal pain after pregnancy.
3. Anisochilus garnosus
Anisochilus-“Katpooravalli”
Indian borage is an aromatic , perennial succulent which grows upto 1 m in height .
The small flowers are white or pale purple in colour. Leaves are heart shaped fleshy in nature .
Medicinal uses:-
Promotes flow of urine.
For the expelling of gases, flatulence and griping pains from the stomach and bowel.
Good for asthma and acute abdominal pain.
Used for boils and swellings.
For kidney problems and epilepsy.
Used for sore throat,headache.
Methods of using:-
Can have the leaf extract along with katkandu for cough among small children.
Running nose can be controlled by applying the mixture prepared by
Leaf extract
Jaggery
Gingelly oil
Great herbal medicine for sinusitis, cough. Leaf can alone treat the severe cough.
The heated leaves applied externally for sore throat.
The juice can be applied over sorrs,ulcers,boils as ointment.
Application of fresh pounded leaves releives headache.
Decoction of the leave is good remedy for urinogenital disorders.
4. Mimosa pudica
Touch me not- “Thottaarchurungi”
Sensitive plant grows in the low and tropic . They are sensitive to touch. The flowers are numerous long stalked, solitary globose heads. Root contains tannin 10% .
Medicinal use:-
Used for liver disease,constipation,dysentery.
Used for mouth and throat inflammation.
Used in scorpion sting .
Used for treatment of mumps.
Used for cancerous ulcers, skin diseases and glandular swellings.
Methods of using:-
Grind the leaf and root and make them into power. Consume 4-8g along with milk to cure diabetes.
Boil the leaves and massage in severe abdominal pain areas.
Infusion of whole plant is taken for mouth and throat inflammations.
Crushed leaves made into paste and applied tropically on glandular swellings.
The crushed leaf and stem is applied over the scorpion sting to reduce the pain and swelling.
Juice of seeds makes a good lotion to apply on cancerous swelling and wounds.
5. Jasminum officinale
Jasmine -“Mallikai”
The day jasmine is favourite of many. especially for sweet fragrance it puts out. The white or cream coloured plants are often picked and placed in the hair by the young ladies in india. Found in different varieties.
Medicinal uses:-
Checks secretion of milk in case of pus formation in the mammary glands of a nursing mother.
Reduces oral ulcer.
Methods of using
The jasmine oil can be applied to hair for the coolness and moisture.
Placing the flowers on breast for a period of time reduces the milk secretion .
